Knott's Berry Farm - 12/23/2013
We went to Knott's Berry Farm on the first Monday of Winter Break. I can hear you all groaning now... "But Heather, you said this blog was for California Historic Sites, not for amusement park visits."
Well it just so happens that Knott's Berry Farm doesn't only have rides, shows, and the best chicken dinner in town, it is also the home to our first CHL in Orange County...
No. 729 the Old Maizeland School (also known as the Rivera School.)
This was the first school built in the Rivera District in 1868, but it was later moved to Knott's Berry Farm and placed inside the Calico Ghost Town. It was a bit difficult to find as it's not the "schoolhouse" on the map. It is directly to the left of the pretend cemetery at the rear of the ghost-town.
It is now the home to some sort of nature education area where children can see bugs and lizards, but sadly it was closed during our visit.
I found this old photo of the one-roomed school house before it was moved to Knott's. Apparently Walter Knott brought this building and several more to his amusement park to protect and preserve them for future generations. Good job Mr. Knott!
